The Jaguars and the Trojans will continue their rivalry in the “Battle for the Belt” for the 11th time this 2022 season. Two rivalries that look to heat up significantly involve the Jaguars as they become divisional opponents with the Trojans and the Golden Eagles. With the divisions staying put, it will create and fuel some of the most heated rivalries in the Sun Belt. While keeping conference record play in check is important, head-to-head matchups should also matter. The Sun Belt is among the conference likely to keep the divisional formats to determine their conference championship participants. The Pac-12 dissolved divisions immediately after the NCAA loosened the restrictions of their conference championship games. One of the biggest discussions this off-season is the relevance of divisions in conferences. Sun Belt is not moving away from divisions like the other leagues They were not a representative of the 2018 Sun Belt Conference Championship game due to their head-to-head loss to the Mountaineers 21-10. They were named co-divisional champs of the East due to the same conference record as the Appalachian State Mountaineers. The Trojans won one divisional championship in 2018 since the divisions were created in that same season. Another interesting change to the divisions is that the Troy Trojans will be moved from the East to the West to match the geological setting of all 14 teams. James Madison, Marshall, and Old Dominion will join the East Division and Southern Miss will join the West Division. The James Madison Dukes will not be eligible to contend for a Sun Belt Conference Championship title or participate in a postseason bowl game until the 2023 College Football season. Another added to the Sun Belt Conference this season is James Madison, who is coming from the FCS into the FBS for the first time. All four of these teams will join the Sun Belt Conference for the first time. Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss join the Sun Belt after being a part of Conference USA for several years. South Alabama has an optimistic season outlook as they endure some changes around them.įour new teams will be officially included in the Sun Belt Conference this upcoming season on July 1st. On top of the newcomers added to the Sun Belt, they are several teams expected to remain as some of the best non-Power Five teams in college football.
The Sun Belt Conference experienced more of the big changes this off-season than any other conference as they a group of new teams. While the Jaguars mind their own business, the rest of the College Football landscape continues to be rocked by the earthquakes such as conference realignment and constantly changing recruiting rules.
